Zelma Lois Sweeting age 92, former Perry resident, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Country View Nursing Facility in Bowling Green, MO. She was born December 31, 1924 to Lee and Hettie Orr of Perry, IL. She graduated from Perry High School in 1943 where she was involved in many activities as well as a cheerleader. Zelma married Robert Sweeting in 1945 at Norfolk, VA where he was stationed in the US Navy. She is survived by their two children, Terry (Judy) Sweeting of New Hartford, IL and Sally (Allen) Showalter of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren and five great-grand children.
Zelma wrote poetry, dabbled in pencil portrait sketching, and inherited the skills of a cook and baker from her mother. One of her greatest passions was playing the piano. She began as a child and although she could not read music, she played by ‘ear’. One of her favorites was the theme from the movie, Dr. Zhivago. She composed many of her own pieces and lyrics—each note, each word—memorized in her head and fingertips. She still played at 92.
Zelma was a member of the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Bowling Green.
She requests no services, but to be put with her parents and husband at Morrellville Cemetery north of Perry, IL. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com.
