Mary E. Cory, 83, of Godfrey died on Sunday afternoon Dec. 17, 2017 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenfield, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Mildred Fern (Tate) Journey.
On Feb. 15, 1957 she married Kenneth Cory in Eldred and he survives. Also surviving are their children: Cathy (Larry) Prough of Carrollton, Dennis Cory of Wood River, grandchildren: Michelle (Jim) Cox, Carrie (Brian) Hill, Michael (companion Brittney) Cory, Brandon (companion Renae) Cory, 6 great-grandchildren, a sister: Karen (Phil) Reason of Forsythe, IL, and 2 brothers: Cleve (Judy) Journey of Bethalto, Larry (Randi) Journey of Benton, IL. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter Kelly Jo Prough and a sister Eleanor Damm.
Mary attended the Eldred High School and was a 1952 graduate of Carrollton High School. She received her Associates degree in Accounting in 1985. She was a bookkeeper for the Alton Senior Center and retired from Senior Service Plus in 1994. Unable to just stay home, she found a lot of volunteer work as a SHIP counselor for the Illinois Dept. of Insurance, a TCE counselor for AARP, a dispatcher for Bethalto Senior Bus and served on the Board of Directors at Southwestern Illinois Area Agency. She also loved to help with church activities. Mary loved cooking and was known for her breads and “dirt” cake. Mary and her beloved husband Kenneth enjoyed square dancing and going to many high school athletic competitions. She and her partner of 60 years, Kenny enjoyed people and were known by many for their quick smiles and warm hugs. She will be sadly missed.
Visitation will be held on Thursday Dec. 21, 2017 from 9:30 til 11:00 A.M. at the Eldred Baptist Church. Services will be held at the church following visitation with burial in Carrollton City Cemetery to follow. Memorials donations may be directed to Senior Services Plus.
