Obituary of Mary Locher

Mary Winifred Locher, 99, of Roodhouse passed away Thursday, January 19, at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.

Mrs. Locher, or “Winnie” as she was known to her friends, was born January 2, 1918, in rural Greene County, Illinois, the daughter of Frederick Sylvester Pewter and Mildred Clara Wade Pewter. She married William Joseph Locher of Roodhouse on September 10, 1950, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Greenfield. He preceded her in death on February 1, 1995.

Winnie attended Rockbridge schools, graduating in 1936 from Rockbridge High School. She was a 1938 graduate of Blackburn College with additional work at Shurtleff College in Alton and Washington University in St. Louis.

Before her marriage, Winnie taught at rural schools in Greene and Macoupin Counties, at Greenfield Grade School and for the Roxanna School District. She was a substitute teacher at Roodhouse Elementary School from 1950-1963. She also worked at Hamm’s Menswear in Roodhouse and at Storm, a popular gift shop in White Hall, for several years.

Winnie enjoyed many volunteer activities, which included serving on the board of the White Hall Hospital Auxiliary, working for the local food pantry, Blood Bank, Meals on Wheels and at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, where she volunteered for 21 years. Winnie was honored as the hospital volunteer of the year in 2004.

She was a former member of the Roodhouse Woman’s Club, the Roxana Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association and the Illinois Education Association. She was a 50-year member of Greene County Home Extension and the Roodhouse American Legion Auxiliary. She was a very active member of All Saints Catholic Church in White Hall.

Winnie is survived by her son, Barry Locher (Debra), of Springfield, and grandchildren Tad Locher of Havana, Bonnie Locher of Columbia, Mo., and W. Joseph Locher of Carbondale.

Services for Mary Winifred Locher will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 23, at All Saints Catholic Church in White Hall. Family will receive guests at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service, with private burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Greenfield, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be directed to All Saints Catholic Church, White Hall, Illinois, or to Passavant Area Hospital Foundation, Jacksonville, Illinois.
