Doris Mae Gehrig, age 91 of Roodhouse, died Thursday, April 13, 2017 at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born March 16, 1926 in Roodhouse, the daughter of Ernest L. and Bertha M. Thady Simmons. She married Paul E. Gilmore in 1948, and they later divorced. She then married Robert Gehrig on January 12, 1975 at Roodhouse and he preceded her in death September 15, 2005.
She is survived by her three children, Robert P. (Wife Carol) Gilmore, of Roodhouse, Nancy E. Stice of Roodhouse, and Ronald E. (wife Becky) Gilmore of White Hall. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Craig (Crystal), Jeff (Kristy), and Brad (Torrie) Gilmore. Kim (Garrett) Rogers, Tami Stice, Amanda (Matt) Goben, and Katy (Ryan) Whalen. Derrick (Amber) and Joshua (Nicole) Gilmore, and step grandchildren Gaylan (Katie) Waterfallen and Heather (Chris) Webb. There are 16 great grandchildren; Kenzi, Alex, and Steven Gilmore, Chloe Gilmore, Mallory, Libby, and Jaidelynn Rogers, Jordan and Jase Goben, Madilyn, Taylor, and Landon Gilmore, Stella and Shelby Gilmore, Bryce and Halle Webb, and Damon Christian. she is also survived by her sister, Margaret McClenning of Roodhouse, as well as a niece and two nephews, and her canine companion, Billy Bob.
Doris had been a school teacher at country schools for a time, and then worked at several places in Roodhouse including the Gamble Store, LaCrosse Lumber Company, Taylor’s Jewelry, and the Roodhouse Library. She was a member of the Roodhouse Women’s Club, Greene County Home Extension, and the Roodhouse American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a long time member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Roodhouse where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Doris enjoyed walking her dog, gardening, and especially family get togethers, where family games were a special time for her.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 15 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Roodhouse. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Fernwood Cemetery in Roodhouse. Memorials are suggested to Emmanuel Baptist Church or to the Roodhouse Library.
