Obituary of Helen Brown

Helen S. Brown, age 90, of Waverly, Il. died early Sunday (July 30, 2017) at Concordia Village in Springfield, Il.

She was born December 9, 1926 in Palmyra, Il. daughter of the late Ralph H. and Irene Imel Schramm.

She married Warren R. Brown on March 17, 1946 and he preceded her in death on January 6, 2008.

Surviving are children, Gordon K. Brown and wife Ellie of Springfield, Il., Phyllis J. Brown of Bosque Farms, New Mexico and Sheri Schramm of Alto, New Mexico; three grandsons, Tristan Edwards, Cooper Schramm, and Isaac Cruz all of New Mexico; a granddaughter, Kristy Baum of St. Croix, USVI; and two great-grandchildren, Amber and Mason.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son Richard Alan Brown; two grandchildren, Stephen Paul Brown and Alina Graham; and two brothers, Marvin and Carroll Schramm.

Helen was a graduate of Carlinville High School in 1944.  She was a homemaker and a proud farm wife who did everything from driving and moving equipment, to tending livestock and cooking wonderful meals often punctuated with pie or cobbler which she enjoyed making.. She was a member of BA & TIE local women’s clubs joining as a young wife.  She was also a 20 plus year member of Home Bureau.  Helen canvassed Waverly for passage of bonds for Lincoln Land Community College and enjoyed many classes there.  Her daughter Phyllis received her nursing degree from Lincoln Land and Helen told her she always wanted to be a nurse. Even though she never received a degree she became caregiver to many.  She also taught swimming in Waverly for many years.  Helen was an artist who enjoyed oil painting and ran art shows at the local county and state fairs.  She also enjoyed leather tool crafting, crocheting, knitting, gardening, dancing, fishing and bowling.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Monday (August 7, 2017) at the Waverly United Methodist Church in Waverly, Il.  Burial will be at a later date in Waverly East Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church.  Memorials may be made to Waverly Rescue Squad or Waverly United Methodist Church both c/o Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, 349 Tanner, Waverly, Il.62692.  Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.airsman-hires.com.
