Obituary of Earl Bettis

 

            Earl Eldon Bettis, 82, of South Jacksonville, died Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.  He was born April 26, 1935, near Winchester, the son of Edwin and Ada Marie Eskew Bettis.  Earl married Bertha Louise Craddock on July 3, 1965, at Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, and she survives.

            Earl is also survived by three children, Earl Wayne (Amy) Bettis of Fenton, Missouri, Mary Louise (Kurt) Rogers of Springfield, and Gary Allen (Stacey) Bettis of Chatham; five grandsons, Brian and Nick Rogers, and Brett, Garrett, and Brayden Bettis; five step-grandsons, Michael, Stephen, and Daniel Christeson, and Tony and Lance Rogers, and five step-great-grandchildren, Kylar Christeson, and Aria, Mason, Elise, and Dorian Rogers.  Earl is also survived by two brothers, Harold Bettis of Woodson and Mervan (Ruth) Bettis of Jacksonville, and one sister, Rosemary (Steve) Beddingfield of Virginia.  Earl was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvy Bettis (surviving wife Donna of Jacksonville), John Bettis (surviving wife Irene of Chapin), and Robert Bettis (surviving wife Charlotte of Jacksonville), and two sisters, Virginia Hartz and Ruby Page.

            Earl was a track foreman inspector for Norfolk and Southern Railroad, retiring after 30 years of service.  He was a longtime member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, gardening, telling jokes, and following the St. Louis Cardinals.

            A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery.  The family will meet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the family for medical expenses, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.  Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com.
