Martha Hamann

Obituary of Martha Hamann

Martha L. (Cheek) Hamann lived a long and vibrant life from her birth on July 5, 1924 in Waco, Texas to her death on October 12, 2017 at home in Carrollton, Illinois surrounded by numerous family members.

At the age of eight Martha was sent to live at Buckner Orphans Home in Dallas.  Later she worked as a telephone operator in Waco.  During this time she met her future husband, Richard (Dick) Hamann, when he was stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas.

Martha and Dick married and lived in Carrollton, Illinois for the remainder of their lives, raising five daughters.  Martha was a dedicated, hard-working wife and mother.  She was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church volunteering many hours.    Her passion for baking and sewing led to her starting a 4-H club with dear friend Marge Hopkins.  She supported all her husband’s efforts from his classroom to his sports teams during his 54 year career at Carrollton High School.  She was “the glue” that held her family together, the mother-behind-the scenes for almost everything that happened. Her feisty, can-do, positive spirit will live on in the loving family she leaves behind:

Daughters:  Nancy Shepherd (Andy Novak), Susan Giller (Tom), Diane Herzog (Sue Petro), Lisa Bottom (Jasen), and Laura Cross (Scott)

Grandchildren:  Monika and Nik Shepherd, Christopher Giller, Clayton

Clendenny (Beth), Kolten Bottom, Alex and Noah Cross

Great Grandchildren:  Sophia and Sebastian Shepherd

Honoring her wishes, there will be no funeral services.  Persons wishing to donate funds in her memory can do so to the First Presbyterian Church in Carrolton, Carrollton High School Track Fund and BJC Hospice (Hospice Patient Fund BJC Hospice PO Box 504043 St.Louis, MO 63150-0001).
