Dode attended St. Johns Grade School and two years of high school before graduating from Carrollton High School in 1952. He served in the Air Force from 1953-1957, including one year in Alaska.  He attended Southern Illinois University for his pre-medical studies.  He studied his first year of medical school at St. Louis University School of Medicine and then transferred to the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago for the remaining three years.  He graduated in June of 1964.  He completed one year of internship at Decatur-Macon County Hospital in Decatur and remained there for an additional course in anesthesiology.  Jude and his wife returned to Carrollton and he started his practice in the fall of 1965.  He remained in private practice for over 47 years delivering babies, providing anesthesia coverage, covering the emergency room and finally working in the Carrollton Rural Health Clinic. He served on the Thomas H Boyd Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees and was president from 1973 until 1995.

Dr. Caselton loved all outdoor activities and always was a hunter, a commercial fisherman and gardener.  The Boyd hospital and its staff received fish and produce throughout his active practice years and he continued to provide many with vegetables from his garden after he retired.  He also loved dispensing peppermints, red hots, dum dums and butter scotch to all patients and children.

If Dode could tell one story – well, that’s just not possible.

A special thanks for his care over the last 15 months goes to the staff (especially the nurses) at Boyd Memorial Hospital, St. Louis University Hospital, Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, BJC Hospice Group and more recently, the wonderful staff at the Cottages of Jerseyville Estates.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017 with a greeting at 9:30 am and Mass beginning at 11:30 am at St. John's Catholic Church in Carrollton.  Dode donated his body to St. Louis University’s science program.  A lunch will be held at the American Legion in Eldred after Mass.  Memorial donations may be directed to: St. John's School Tuition Fund (Carrollton), Thomas H. Boyd Hospital or the charity of your choice.
