Obituary of Mary Saunders

Mary E. “Mae” Saunders, 92, of Jacksonville passed away Monday, October 23, 2017 at Heritage Health in Jacksonville. She was born May 20, 1925 in New Berlin the daughter of Arthur C. and Iona Wilner Behl. She married Clarence H. Morris and they later divorced. She later married Harold E. Yeck and Robert Saunders and they both preceded her in death.

                  She is survived by one daughter, Juanita “Penny” Leonhard of Jacksonville;  two grandsons, John Kyle Leonhard and Tobin Daniel (Melissa) Leonhard; two sisters, Dorothy Gillis (Clifford, deceased) and Betty (Earl) Reese; one brother, Morris (Verna) Behl; two great granddaughters, Hannah and Jenna Leonhard; two step great-grandsons, Austin Davy and Tyler Gatzgy and one step great granddaughter, Melanie Davy. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, Arthur, Jr., Louis, Herman, Robert, Terry and Larry Behl and four sisters, Bernice Behl, Alberta Ozee, Mary Denham and Charlotte Denny and one great granddaughter, Nicole Renee Leonhard.

                  Mary was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. During World War II she packed flares at the Nesco Plant and later worked at Hertzberg Book Bindery in Jacksonville for over 30 years. After retirement, she worked for several years at Illinois College, taking tickets for students in the dining hall where she would wear Halloween costumes and hand out treats. The students loved her and called her “Grandma”.  Mary was beloved by her family and many life-long friends.

                  Mary loved to go fishing and mushroom hunting with her husband Harold. She also introduced her grandsons to fishing. She and Robert Saunders were active in the Hospice Festival of Trees for many years.

                  A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Williamson Funeral Home. The family will meet friends from 3:00-4:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family, First Presbyterian Church of the Alzheimer’s Association.
