Obituary of John Barfield, Sr.

John Robert Barfield, Sr., 82, of Springfield, died Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at his son’s residence in Springfield.  He was born May 11, 1935, in Morgan City, the son of Lester William and Helen Lindsey Barfield. 

            John is survived by five children, Sherri Lynn Barfield of Jacksonville, Rocky (Penny) Barfield of Springfield, Kevin (Angie) Barfield of Jacksonville, Todd Barfield of Jerseyville, and Ambra Barfield of Perry; six grandchildren, Rocky Lynn Barfield, II, Anthony Ryan Barfield, Mark Jones, Derek Jones, James Jones, and Cheyenne Jones; five step-children, Gabriel Tillery of Cordon, Indiana, Melody Hunter and Christopher Dilks, both of Jerseyville, Michelle “Missy” (Matt) Rhoades of New Berlin, and Kisha (John) Stiles of Jerseyville; several step-grandchildren and step- great-grandchildren, two sisters, Louise Briggs of Lakeland, Florida and Shirley Jean DeJaynes of Clinton, one brother, Jim (Karen) Barfield of Winchester, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by one son, John Barfield, his wife, Carol Ann Ogle, two sisters, Sarah Ann Varner and Rosalie Stark, and two brothers, Harold Barfield and Lester Barfield.

            John was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served from 1955-57.  He then worked for many years at Allis-Chalmers in Springfield until it closed, and as a farmhand for several area farmers.  He then worked at Burrus Seed in Arenzville for twenty years, retiring at the age of 80.  He loved automobile racing and sports.

            The family will meet friends from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville.  A graveside service and military rites will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.  Memorials are suggested to the Bob Freesen YMCA.  Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com.
