Obituary of John Stewart

               John William “Bill” Stewart, 67, of Waverly, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 7, 2017, at his residence.

            He was born November 17, 1949, in Springfield, the only son of Merril A. & Ruth Ann (Reiser) Stewart.  He was married on August 24, 1966, at Raymond, Illinois to Patti Van Buskirk and they were later divorced.  He married Shawn Marie Branham in Tucson, AZ on Nov. 18, 1989 and she preceded him in death on Oct. 16, 2006.  On  Aug. 6, 2016, he married Allison Chandler in Waverly and she survives.

            In addition to his wife Allison, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy Jo Stewart (companion, Russell Wells) ,  of Superior, WI, and Mandy Lea (Kenneth) Basille of Marietta, GA.  Also surviving are four grandsons, Matthew Gullick, Joshua Gullick,  Jacob Haight and Brandon Basille,  and one granddaughter, Katelin Basille all of GA; five great-grandsons;  two sisters, Shirley A. (Fred) Aleguas, of Waverly and Judey (Dennis) Harrington of Lebanon, TN,  several nieces and a nephew.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, John William Stewart II on Dec. 22, 1992 .

            Following graduation from Waverly High School in 1967, he began a life-long career as a printer with Horace Mann Insurance Company in Springfield.  He subsequently worked  as a printer in California, Texas and Tucson, AZ where, before retirement, he owned his own printing business with his brother-in-law.  He enjoyed watching sports and car racing, particularly his favorite Oakland Raiders football team.  After moving back to Waverly in 2015, his favorite activities were sitting on the front porch and visiting with friends, neighbors and classmates, watching and feeding the birds and buzzing around town on his golf cart.


Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (November 18, 2017) at Waverly East Cemetery in Waverly, Il.  There will be no visitation.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Post 262 American Legion Building Fund or to the Waverly Rescue Squad.  Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Waverly, Il. is in charge of arrangements.
