Obituary of Vera Havens

Vera Orlena Havens, age 97 of Alsey died December 9, 2017 at Scott County Nursing Center. She was born July 17, 1920 in Pittsfield, the daughter of Robert A. and Mary M. Nicholson Shive. She married William “Bill” Havens on January 12, 1939 in Louisiana, MO and he preceded her in death October 3, 1999.

Surviving is a daughter, Betty (Keith ) Jefferson of Alsey, two sons, James (Carolyn) Havens of Springfield, Robert (Karla) Havens of Jacksonville, nine grandchildren, Lynnette Martin, Jim Havens, Mark Young, Bruce and Robert Jefferson, Julie Jones, Jill Winks, JoDee Warrington, Shelly Holtz, fifteen great grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren, four sisters, Betty Wilder of North Fond du Lac, WI, Alice Guth of Gridley, Jane Nevius of Peoria, and Norma (A.C.) Reel of Pittsfield, and a brother Joe (Mary Mae) Shive of White Hall, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by, two sons, Tom Havens and Dan Havens (who was killed while serving in Vietnam in 1967), two sisters, Frances Giger and Mabel Chapman, and five brothers, Dick, Bill, John, Jack and Tom Shive.

Vera grew up in Pike County, attending school in Milton and Pittsfield. Being the oldest of thirteen children, she was her father’s “helper.” She helped her husband farm over many decades. Early on, she shucked corn by hand and worked in the fields with Bill and a team of horses, and later drove trucks and tractors, raised chickens, and enjoyed gardening. Looking back, she was proud of all the hard work she did. She said “I was taught early in life to share and divide and later to have patience and count my blessings.” Vera enjoyed cooking, and traveled to 42 states and England.  She loved spending time with her family and friends. After a fall in her home in Alsey she made her home at the Scott County Nursing Center where she received excellent care the past year and half. Vera was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church,located South of Alsey. She also attended Alsey Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester with burial to follow in Bloomfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Alsey Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church or Scott County Nursing Center.
