Obituary of Winifred Brickley
Winifred Adele Varble Brickley, 97, wife of the late Charles James Brickley, passed away Saturday March 31st at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home.
Born in Carrollton, Il on May 9, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Edith and Ray Varble, of Carrollton, Il.
Winnie was born in Carrollton, and attended St John’s Catholic School and High School there. She worked for Greene County Representative Sid Simpson, and accompanied him as Secretary when he moved to Washington D.C. as a Congressman. She worked her way up to the position of Simpson’s Administrative Assistant, and after his death continued to work on Capitol Hill as an Administrative Assistant to other Congressmen until her retirement.
Winnie was an accomplished athlete, played tennis well into her 80’s, and was an avid Washington Redskins fan. Though she remained in the Washington, D.C. area late into her life, she and Chuck were especially fond of Carrollton, (which the two affectionately called ‘Carrollton-place’), and they returned frequently to visit. Upon his death, Chuck chose to be buried in Carrollton so the two would be together there. Though Winnie had no children of her own, she was like a second-mother to her thirteen nieces and nephews, and their numerous children and grand-children. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings Harriet Mehrhoff, Vivian Hindelang, Maxine Voiles, H Langdon Varble, and Maurice Varble.
Funeral services will be held at St John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton at 10 a.m., on Monday, April 9th, with visitation at the church from 9-10 a.m. Condolences may be left online at: www.airsman-hires.com.
