Obituary of Lyndell Surbeck

Lyndell Surbeck, 86, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, May 3, 2018, at Jacksonville Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Jacksonville.  He was born October 20, 1931, in White Hall, the son of Byrl C. and Mary Powell Surbeck.  He married Carole M. Barker on December 31, 1952, in Pocahontas, Arkansas, and she preceded him in death on December 15, 2006.

            He is survived by one daughter, Beth (husband, Michael R.) Miles of Jacksonville, one son, Greg (wife, Rita) Surbeck of Springfield, six grandchildren, Lucas (Cori) Miles of Bloomington, Sara (Lucas) McPherson of Bloomington, Emily (Jeremy) Fisher of Las Vegas, Nevada, Molly (Kurt) Turner of Bloomington, Kelsey (Tom) Pagel of St. Louis, Missouri, and Jeff (Erin) Surbeck of Springfield; and four great-grandchildren, Knox and Claire McPherson, Bennett Miles, and Miles Fisher.  He is also survived by one sister, Janice “Jan” (husband David, deceased) Plummer, one nephew, Craig Plummer of Jerseyville, and two cousins, David Surbeck of White Hall and Shirley Schacher of Carrollton.  Lyndell was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Ryne and Weston McPherson.

            Lyndell served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.  He worked for John Ellis Chevrolet and later owned Surbeck Volkswagen in Sioux City, Iowa, before finishing his career at the Farmers State Bank in Jacksonville.  Lyndell was an active member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church where he served as treasurer for many years and participated in the construction of the church addition.  He was also a member of the Ansar Shrine and volunteered at Camp Care A Lot.

            A private service has been held with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight or Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  Condolences may be left online at
