Obituary of Dale Sorrells

Dale Edward Sorrells, age 69 of Patterson, passed away Monday, July 23, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born November 10, 1948 in Jacksonville, the son of Leslie and Ruth Lovelace Sorrells.

He married Jane A. Lane December 24, 1971 in Patterson, and she survives.  Also surviving is a daughter Jennifer (husband Rhone) Gillis, and a grandson Daniel Gillis, all of Alton.  He has a brother David (wife Tina) Sorrells of Patterson, and a sister-in-law Wanda Sorrells of Lawton, Oklahoma.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Dean E. Sorrells of Lawton, OK.

Dale graduated from North Greene High School in White Hall in 1966.  He attended Illinois Wesleyn College and SIU Edwardsville.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed first in El Paso, Texas, then in Korea, serving in the 38th Air Defense Artillery unit during the Vietnam conflict. He worked at Sorrells Garage in Patterson, was a bus driver for North Greene, and later a bus mechanic and supervisor for many years.

Music, and his music family were very important to Dale as he had a God given talent to play many musical instruments.  His music career included playing with many local bands including Southern Nights, Flatland, Silver Spurs, 3 Lane Merge, The Wanderers, and the Pine Tree Pickers at the Patterson Opry, as well as various opry shows throughout Illinois.

To honor Dale, please feel free to wear your Dale Sorrells Music Festival shirts to the visitation.  The night of the Music Festival was one of his favorite memories.  He was very humbled by the love and support he received that night, and was grateful to everyone that attended.

Dale had been a member of the Patterson town board, as well as currently serving on the boards of Pine Tree Cemetery, and Eldred House, and is the current president of the Patterson Community Club.  He is also a member of the 1st Texas Light Artillery Civil War Re-enactment Unit, which had become a passion of Dale’s during his retirement.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2018 at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall, with burial to follow at Pine Tree Cemetery at Patterson.  Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Patterson Community Club.   Condolences may be left on-line at www.airsman-hires.com.
