Obituary of Ward Eldred

Ward Eldred, age 96 of White Hall, died Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at White Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  He was born September 11, 1921 at Haypress, the son of Paul and Hattie Badman Eldred.  He married Mabel Garner on February 9, 1946 and she preceded him in death August 9, 2006. Surviving is a daughter, Merrylee Helenthal of Jacksonville, two sons, Lloyd (Lynette) Eldred of Hillview, and Wilson (Lynn)  Eldred of White Hall, seven grandchildren, Mike and Tim Helenthal, Lance, Brenton, Nicole, and Hayden Eldred, and Darcy Graham,  twelve great grandchildren , a brother Stuart Eldred of Springfield,  and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a great grandchild, Brace Eldred, and three sisters, Mary Jones, Doris Chaney, and Hazel Gillespie.

Ward was a Veteran of WWII serving in the Pacific Theater as a combat engineer assigned to the 77th infantry division. He received the Army Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiac Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal, Ruptured Duck Pin, Unit Citation Award and Expert Carbine Badge. He served in the United States Army from 1942-1946. He owned and operated Eldred Painting in White Hall for more than 60 years retiring in 2006. He was a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at Calvary Baptist Church in White Hall for many years. He enjoyed watching Cardinal Baseball, hunting, fishing, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 1, 2018 at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial to follow in White Hall Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires .com.
