Obituary of Sylvia Coates

Sylvia Irene Coates, age 90 of White Hall passed away at her home Thursday, August 30, 2018. She was born June 29, 1928 in White Hall, the daughter of Jack P. and Cynthia Wallace Sullivan. She married Glendon “Jack” Coates April 12, 1953 in White Hall and he survives.

Also surviving is two sons, J. David (Joyce) Coates, Jonathan Dean (Della) Coates both of White Hall, five grandchildren, Jason Coates, Eric Coates, Jennifer Kraushaar, Tyler Coates, Chantae Coates, ten great grandchildren, Axel, Aiden, Addison, Adriana, Adelise, Benjamin, Kennedy, Jocelyn, Antjuan, LaJuana,  and a nephew Jack (Gladys) Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Richard Sullivan.

Sylvia graduated from White Hall High School in 1946. After graduation she worked at Back’s Department Store until her best friend Mercedes Wyatt graduated. They went to St. Louis to seek work. After a few small jobs, she worked as a secretary for education at the Down Town Y.M.C.A. for many years, until Jack came home from the Far East, at which time they moved to Great Lakes Naval Training Center until his enlistment ended. Back in White Hall, She was a stay-at-home mom until she and Jack opened the Coates Florist for three years. Later she decided to work at the White Hall Hospital in dietary for ten years, at which the hospital closed. During her life she has written many poems for people at the passing of their love ones, leaving a legacy. She was known as the poem lady to many people in the community. She wrote poems for people from Maine, California, Washington and Florida.  She loved to host family dinner on Sunday at her home. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the White Hall Pentecostal Church for many years.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at the White Hall Pentecostal Church with burial to follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery in Wrights. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the church. Memorials may be made to the White Hall Pentecostal Church, White Hall Library, or Greene County Health Department.
